Trichology

What is trichology?

Trichology is the scientific study of the hair and scalp, focusing on the structure, function, and health of these areas. As a certified trichologist, I specialize in identifying and addressing hair and scalp conditions, such as hair loss, thinning, dandruff, and scalp inflammation. By understanding the root cause of hair loss—whether it’s genetics, hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, or stress—I can recommend tailored solutions. These may include scalp treatments, lifestyle adjustments, nutritional support, or collaboration with medical professionals to restore optimal hair and scalp health.

Who can benefit from seeing a trichologist?

Anyone who is concerned about hair loss, oily scalp, flaky scalp, psoriasis, alopecia, or scalp related disorders such as hair pulling, known as trichotillomania. A person should also see a trichologist when they have anything from sudden, excessive hair loss to a bald patch that’s unexplained to a fungal condition that has caused discomfort and itching.

Does my scalp health impact my hair growth?

Yes! Healthy hair growth begins with a healthy scalp. The scalp provides the foundation for hair follicles to thrive. Factors such as excess oil production, product buildup, poor circulation, and conditions like dandruff or inflammation can clog follicles and hinder hair growth. A clean, well-nourished scalp ensures proper blood flow and oxygen supply to the follicles, promoting stronger, healthier hair. Treatments like scalp exfoliation, hydration therapies, and balanced pH maintenance can improve scalp conditions and optimize hair growth.

What are the most common causes of hair loss?

Hair loss can stem from various factors, including genetics, hormonal imbalances from conditions like conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), pregnancy, postpartum changes, or thyroid disorders, nutritional deficiencies such as iron, vitamin D, and protein can weaken hair, stress and scalp conditions like seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, or infections can affect hair growth.

How long does it take to see results from trichology treatments?

Results vary depending on the cause and severity of the hair or scalp issue, as well as individual response to treatment. For most clients, maximum improvements are seen when utilizing consistent treatments for 6 months to a year.
